Being the Microsoft Tribe forum, I’m certain that there are more than a handful of comparisons between Windows and Apple. However, with Windows 8 out in distribution and a new wave of hardware available for consumers, I was faced with the task of upgrading my previous outfit, and had the chance to revisit this debate–”Mac vs. PC.”
Let’s take a look at the hardware selection. All of Apple’s MBP’s look alike and all of Apple’s wholesale iphone 5,4,3,2,1 look alike –in fact, to the layman, they are nearly indistinguishable except for their size. I would assume that someone more familiar with their products might say “that’s the point.” However, I’ve always been a fan of diversity, even if I prefer a more consolidated and simple design, myself.
Apple’s product does seem to have a shine. It’s not hard to see why people often describe them as being the “Mercedes-Benz” of computing. However, unlike Mercedes-Benz, which offers a variety of cars for different purposes (the S-class, SLR, CLS, CL, E, C, etc.), Apple only offers one design. True, the aluminum uni-body and glossy screen look good. But so does an exceptionally crafted black pen. How well the ethos of design (and limited design, I should add) translates into function is another story.
I understand that there are individuals who purchase their computers as they would a handbag or fashion accessory–more for the statement rather than the usage. However, Gucci and LV bags/items are of superior quality (at least that’s what we’re told justifies their prices) compared to their cheaper, mass-produced, brethren.
(Again, I feel that this analogy doesn’t hold well simply because even Gucci and LV handbags come in a clear variety of forms)…
Regarding PC design, for the past decade, OEM’s, besides Lenovo (Thinkpad) and Sony, have really produced garbage for design–focusing, instead, upon the internals and cheaper price points. This makes the technology more accessible, but it’s experience vastly weaker. Where Apple hinders itself from a considerable lack of diversity, Windows OEM’s cut themselves with a severe under-appreciation of stand out design.
However, this has changed over the last three years, with Samsung, Toshiba, Asus, and Acer (along with the other heavy weights), making significant inroads in design. What is nice about this is that we’re provided with a variety of hardware, with each OEM looking to distinguish itself from the other OEM’s.
Does this transition from price-point to design translate into superior function?
Windows PC’s have, at their disposal, the largest network of devices. The sheer amount of variety is amazing–and of course, the quality of this “variety” could probably be plotted onto a graph–fitting the “bell” curve.

The phone is a no-brainer. I do feel sorry for my conflicted neighbors to the south where LTE is both prominent and important due to the over-clogged HSPA bandwidths…. But anyone outside of America who knows even a little bit about smartphones knows the Nexus 4 is a home run…. at any price point… let alone $349 for 16GB and the cheap iphone 5. The thought of having that dock on both my desk and bedside table is very appealing.
I actually get LTE most places near where I live (VZW) but don’t really see that much of an advantage to it. I got great speeds when I was first using it, but it’s slowed down to the point where it is no longer worth the battery drain. The only time that I do find it useful is at crowded events where the 3G networks are clogged. Still, I imagine that I’ll lose that advantage as more people switch to LTE phones. It’s only available in three cities at the moment, and will only be available to 70% of the country by the end of 2014. Also, because I live in the middle of nowhere, I can almost guarantee my local area will be part of that 30% left over, who won’t get it until the end of 2015. Because of this, the lack of 4G/LTE does not bother me at all, and makes the Nexus 4 a no-brainer, although I would miss the touch-sensitive buttons on the bottom of my HTC Sensation.
(That being said, I’m in the market for a new laptop at the moment, so my money’s going towards that, and not a new phone.)
But there’s another player in town too…. a new form factor to the Nexus family…
The Nexus 10 offers exceptional pleasure for your retinas… especially for reading, which I suspect so many of us do every day on-line. It’s also a fairly powerful beast with the new A15 and 2GB RAM…. running pure 4.2 it will be lightning fast. If you prefer your gadgets to be metallic then this may not be the device for you. But for those of us who prefer comfort, grip, and function over aesthetic… the Nexus 10 is a knockout. Again, at an exceptional price. Google knows what the people want in their products… they’ve just put themselves in a unique position with Android such that they’re pigeon-holed with smartphones.
I’ve been tempted by a large number of Windows 8 devices, both ultrabooks and tablets, Pro and RT, ULV Ivy Bridge, Atom, and Arm processors. There is a shit ton of WIndows 8 devices out there…. and I expect to see half see a round 2 next year when Haswell comes out.
Until then, I’m quite happy with my Window 7 laptop, and the Nexus 10 will fill my need for a portable browser larger than my phone.
Here’s my honest take on the real answer for the reason for all Android flagship phones having bigger screen size greater than 4.5 inches.
It’s 2 fold:
1 – Larger screens is differentiation from the iPhone. Android manufacturers struggle for differentiation.
2 – Making a 4″ thin phone with performance comparable to the top Android phones seems to be beyond any of the Android manufacturers. Look at the SG3 Mini for example. Apple touched on this during the iPhone 5 launch and it may not be a popular answer here but the reality is it’s much harder to make a smaller phone as powerful. Exactly like it’s harder to make a thinner laptop with higher performance than a chunky Alienware, for example. A key part of this is battery life. If you compare the battery capacity in the iPhone 5 (I believe 1438 or some figure around there) and compare it to the Android phones, they all require far greater battery capacities to deliver not-quite-as-good battery life. If they had less volume with which to do that, the problem would become even worse. The root cause of this is Apples unique position in being able to tightly integrate hardware and software to maximise efficiency. Also, if you look at the A6 processor it’s fundamentally more efficient than any of the off-the-shelf processors used in all Android phones. It also appears to have some kind of variable clock speed (from 900 to 1300 MHz).
People say Apple doesn’t innovate but the true innovation which Apple keeps delivering is combining the best technology available at the time into impossibly small packages. The Macbook Air, the wholesale iphone 5, the iPad Mini, the iMac – even the retina MBP – they all focus on delivering excellent performance relative to their size.
With the A6 representing true innovation from an engineering standpoint, and with the manufacturer of the iPhone (and other devices) consistently ahead of the competition in terms of materials, design and methods, Apple is in quite a unique position.
CMA Megacorp is an iPhone Game Developer tweeted this morning regarding a potential bug in the iPhone 5 touch-screen. Sliding the touch input back and forth diagonally across the display eventually leads to a loss of touch input, as well as, freezing altogether.
In a video from 9to5mac.com, the glitch is apparent across both builds of iOS 6 (6.0 and 6.0.1) and apparently specific to the iPhone 5, as the iPhone 4Ses in the video are unaffected. Whether this is a software glitch or a hardware glitch is undetermined. Apple recently switched to a new panel technology in the iPhone 5, developed by Sharp, to allow for an overall thinner display. This enabled the iPhone 5 to be one of the thinnest smartphones on the market.
