I see an NFC tag every time I swipe my credit card. That is wide adoption. You know what would be surprising and delightful? Using my iPhone instead of my wallet on a holistic and tight payment experience that would ensure ubiquity. You know who is capable of doing this? Apple.it would be nice to use the NFC but mobile payments are such a mess of competing standards right now. I’ve had NFC on my nexus s for a long time, never used it a single time. You can surprise and delight in a 1st and maybe 2nd generation product but by the 6th generation you’re firmly into ’don’t fuck up a good thing’ territory.
I believe the “revolutionary” and “innovative” thing comes from Apple themselves. Every iPhone is the “biggest thing to happen since iPhone.” Every iPad is “the most “revolutionary” iPad yet.” Every iPod just “maximizes funness.” Every Mac is “over 4x faster than its predecessor.”
Apple regards itself as making the most innovative and revolutionary products – and that’s where both lovers and haters get that image from. Whether you agree or not, that’s where it comes from.
I agree with you though, I haven’t had any issues with iOS6. If you ask me, the only people who have issues with it, don’t use iOS all that much. I’m going to wait for the next iPhone though, I’ve always traditionally missed every second generation and I don’t think it’s worth the upgrade over a 4S.
Often times, to make great products, you’ve got to make innovations and revolutions. But sometimes, as with the case with iPhone 5, only overall hardware improvements can make it great. There are no ‘true’ innovations that can be utilized for smartphones nowadays.
And talking about ‘technological’ revolution, iPhone 5 packs the most powerful hardware into the slimmest design ever. It is nearly as powerful as Galaxy Note 2, which is way bigger. Can’t this be considered ‘surprising’ or ‘amazing’?
Apple could have easily made NFC widespread. It would have been awesome (during the keynote) to see them present all of their partners that they have teamed up with to launch NFC payments at locations all around. Apple definitely had the power to do, but for some reason they chose not to.
NFC in its current form is both too big and at the same time consumes too much power that it will make the iP5 bigger than the iP4S in order to accommodate the chip itself and a much larger battery. Besides, I’ve not had a situation where I’d say, “Damn! I wish my phone had NFC”. My solution to NFC to get a nice Ionic IMPRESSION iphone 5 Case like this one from hand graft:
