Entangled and confused was I mere weeks ago, when my saddened pockets yelped at the mercy of a terrifying thought; my large hands reaching, but failing to grasp what I was aiming for, among the lottery of objects that clanged around as I roamed the streets of downtown. However, as the sun settled towards the bleak, muddled cluster of clouds that quickly approached, I would need to heed the advice that my pair of jeans had longed for me to follow.
Comparing the present penitence in my soul to the maps that I would soon replace, I decided to follow my destiny, and proceeded to open the black box that presented itself to me. With my Samsung Infuse and old iPod Touch both tucked within a chamber of solitude, an immediate feeling of courage overcame me. It had been more than two years since my “phone without the phone” had been removed from SPIGEN SGP iPhone 5 Case, and just over a year since I had felt the power of half a dozen widgets magically dilute the battery of my Infuse. I hesitated, followed the contour of the glistening (and patented) shape with my finger, and spoke what seemed to be the first words of relief of mine in a long time; “Hello, iPhone 5.”
I like to believe that I am a “Tech-enthusiast”, as many so-called Tech-enthusiasts like to call themselves now. I reciprocate the fiery-emotional responses of dozens of arguments daily, with Fanboys and flame wars only slowing me subtly, as I yearn to get my message across; Yes, I have switched from owning two, multi-purpose yet personally-limiting devices, to obtain one which Phil Schiller has described as “an absolute jewel”. After using it for over two weeks, I tend to agree with his un-hyperbolic statement, but I won’t end it there, of course. In the end, the message I actually wish to get across, is this; choose the device that suits your needs best, and don’t count on reviews to define your results and expectations; even at their best, critiques merely guide. With that in mind, the real aim of my review is to act as a guide for people with even a mild interest in this device, and to hopefully help potential customers to make their decisions that much easier.
I went for black. I have changed my mind several times over the past week or so. I still love the jewel-like appearance of the white and particularly the polished edge but the black looks like it is carved from solid and the color just leaps out. The Note that we had alongside it was white and it seemed to exaggerate the “cartoon-like” over saturation.
Currently I am more of a software guy, my hardware knowledge is limited to basic consumer off the shelf parts, which is to say, it is very shallow. I am interested in obtaining a more in-depth knowledge of hardware so I can design my own custom ARM and/or Atom-compatible circuit boards and mobile hardware, small cheap things running a custom OS, probably BSD-based, for a specific purpose.
I’m currently using a MBP with my Droid Incredible 2 quite seamlessly.
I use the Mighty Text Chrome Plugin & Growl to get my SMS/MMS to appear in Notification Center & for the ability to reply by clicking on the notification. My calendar & contacts sync through Mountain Lion’s built in Google Account Support which also puts Calendar Events in Notification Center. Google Music syncs my iTunes library to the cloud, and I use Air Droid for transferring non-cloud music to my SD Card over WiFi. Ever note Syncs my notes between OSX & Android. Drop box sync’s my photos to the Mac with the auto upload feature.
Out of all the manufactures I think HTC offers the best sync option for an android phone and a Mac. I’ve been using the One X with an Air for some time now, and before that I had used my Air with a nexus. Both work well, but HTC’s media sync is fairly seamless.
Let’s say for example I want to build something that at a glance, looks like a Nintendo DS, not for gaming, but maybe as an electronic cookbook that can stand up to the elements in the kitchen, or something else, the application doesn’t really matter at this point. And for a challenge, two touch screens instead of one, but a clamshell design, a directional pad maybe some custom buttons. Is it possible to even source all the parts I would need, and for less than a hundred? If the Raspberry Pi can go for $35, I imagine the cost shouldn’t be utterly prohibitive, but what about just getting my hands on the screen panels? Can you even order something anywhere close to the quality of an SPIGEN SGP iPhone 5 Screen right now? If not right now, is the likelihood of it being possible in 3 to 5 year’s time high or low?
I’d love to learn more about hardware and industrial design, but if it isn’t even possible to do the things I want to do simply for lack of affordable parts, I have other hobbies I could take up instead. Thanks in advance!
