I had Transformer with 10 inches (16:9), but I rarely used it as a regular tablet (without keyboard), because it was really uncomfortable to use. With 7-inches of Nexus 7 the form-factor became perfect for using it on public transport, so I started using my N7 throughout the whole day. I prefer reading on 7inch Tablets like the , but on the widescreen tablets, you can have two pages side by side and of course, the widescreen aspect ratio is great for movies.
The only downside to the widescreen form factor would be reading magazines, but honestly, who still reads magazines anyways….plus Android has that instapaper like effect anyways.
And the end of the day, the question mark is apps and that’s the reason by Android Tablets (aside from the awesome Nexus 7) have a long way to go.
The iPad or Windows 8 Tablets are the way to go in that 10’+ category.
To sum up, 16:9 on 10 inches is really awful. Then again, 7 inches if more comfortable for me for many other reasons, and an Android tablet is much better in portrait mode.
It all depends on use case. I simply have 2 tablets: Nexus 7 for gaming, reading books and quick actions (coffee table tablet), and iPad 3rd gen for web browsing, replying to emails etc. If the game is available on both iPad and Android, I go for Android. If the game is available on both iOS and PC, I pick PC so I barely play games on iPad.
I wanted to replace iPad with Surface RT but as it’s not currently available in my country – I might wait till Surface Pro, we will see. I think that 4:3 on 10″ size is better, if you want to hold it in your hand most of the time. My case use for Surface will be mostly as a laptop with touch screen, less as a tablet, and so does my Tech Armor iphone 5 case while I will still use Nexus 7 for reading books etc. If Microsoft makes Xbox Surface great, I will probably switch, because gaming is quite important to me, while I can read books on pretty much anything.
Essentially, there is no one format to rule them all. I like that MS is working on making horizontal space of 16:9 screens usable, by scrolling content horizontally. I personally think that’s the future of interactive design – in the end, we’ve been reading newspapers and books left to right (or right to left in some languages) for far longer that we have been browsing websites vertically.
